In 1984 Tom Jones of Euroski and John Boyers Outdoor Educational teacher at Beacon School Crowborough and a qualified Nordic ski instructor decided to form Susnord Nordic Ski Club for children at his school.
The club, with the support of the parents, reached 20+ members aged 12 to 16. They trained weekly around the school playgrounds on their rollerskis with great success.
Soon they were invited to enter the competition at the British Nordic Ski championships on snow at Zwisel near the Czech border. At first, eight of the team went to Sweden for a weeks training for the first time on snow. When they arrived from Sweden they realised they did not have racing skis. Euroski arranged for them to collect ten pairs of racing skis from the Hagen ski factory in Austria as they had to compete against the British national teams and the Army Nordic teams.
At the championship, they beat the ladies national team by 4 minutes and many other teams present. They came home winning the silver cup as the best all-round team at the championship. It just goes to show what you can do by training on rollerskis before going on snow.
We stock a number of different models from several suppliers in the USA, Italy, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Holland, etc. So we can supply to different customers their requirements for different terrains. The most popular type of rollerskiing is on tarmac or similar surfaces like cycle tracks etc. To other potential rollerskiers who live out in the open country, we sell OFF ROAD rollerskis for use on country lanes, tracks or paths. The same rollerskis can be used on smooth surfaces as they have large inflatable rubber tyres. When it come to racing, then there comes a choice of skating, classic and combi rollerskis. Mainly done on tarmac the wheels tend to be narrow and made of urethane for speed and endurance.
Now some 20 years later, we are thinking of resurrecting Susnord Nordic Ski Club and are looking for club members to join us in East Sussex. We are in discussions with Knockhatch Ski Slope near Hailsham and are wondering whether to put the Cuckoo Trail running from Eastbourne to Hailsham into operation.
Please don't try snow skiing without any practice on rollerskis
